11 Tips for Working Smarter, Not Harder

Starting your own business can be an all-encompassing kind of thing. I mean it is just so exciting. Of course you want to work on it all the time BUT being busy doesn’t mean being productive. If you don’t work smartly you’ll end up working extra hard AND burning yourself out. #bummer.

So are you ready to save loads of time, be more productive, reach your goals faster and take care of your precious self?

Put everything in your planner

Using a calendar and planning out tasks ahead is so, so essential for getting things done and keeping  your head clear. Whether you use a digital calendar or a physical paper planner keep track of everything you need and want to do. Include everything from the tiny things that keep daily life ticking over to the major things that will push your business forward.

Check in with yourself daily

Sometimes we get so busy that we ignore how we’re feeling. Every day ask yourself how you’re feeling, what went well about the day, what you want to do again and what you don’t want to do again. Self-care #ftw.

Eat healthy food

I’m about to go all mum on you here but eat your vegetables! A well balanced diet is so crucial to a healthy functioning body, brain and even your moods. Eat loads of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. And water, guys, drink water!

Get enough sleep

I know sometimes only getting a few hours of sleep is viewed as a badge of honour (hello post-grad) but seriously, it’s a bad idea. Getting enough sleep is what ensures your brain is operating on its A-game. Sleep is so important to your brain, it’s just not worth cutting a few hours of sleep to get a bit more work done because your work will definitely suffer and you’ll feel yucky.

Don’t blow yourself off

You are your best asset. You are the fountain of amazing ideas that make your business one of a kind. Treat yourself with the care and respect you deserve and you’ll be surprised by what you can accomplish.

Maintain boundaries

Ok guys, this is a huge one for me. Since I started my biz while working fulltime I spent nights, weekends, train rides, lunches.. any time working on my business. I was totally hooked on growing it and spent every free moment focusing on it. It was ok when it was just early day enthusiasm but as time wore on I began blowing friends off and staying up late (see that note on sleep above) and I ended up crashing and burning. womp womp. Your business is not your life. Your business is there to enable you to LIVE your life. So make sure you keep things in their proper place.

Prioritise

If you have 100 competing things to do, prioritising them is one of the best ways to get loads of smart working done. When reviewing your to-do list ask yourself two questions:

  1. Is it clear that this task will grow my business in a measurable way? If the answer is yes, then it should make the final cut for important tasks. Otherwise, you can either cross it off or put it on a ‘to do someday’ list.
  2. What would happen if this task didn’t get done? If the answer is nothing bad or even better, nothing at all, then cross it off the list.

Say no

It’s ok to say no. In fact, it’s one of the best things you can do for both yourself and your business. Saying no to things that aren’t going to help you achieve your business goals means you’ll get to that goal in half the time.

Don’t work harder than you need to

Working hard doesn’t mean you’re pushing yourself closer to your goals, it just means you’re expending a lot of energy. Work smarter so you can get more done. Put systems in place that mean you don’t have to think about trivialities, but rather focus on your mega goals.

Celebrate the small victories

If you just focus on the big wins you’ll miss all of the beautiful tiny victories along the way. Celebrate your small wins and your big wins in equal measure. Just in case you needed an excuse to party.

Breathe

Breathe.  When it all feels too much, breathe. When everything feels amazing, breathe. Breathe, breathe, breathe. Life is wonderful and your business will be a success.

To sum up:

Don’t work hard, work smart

Working hard doesn’t mean automatically mean you’re getting a lot done. Make sure you’re working smart so you reach your goals in half the time, with half the effort.

You are your best asset

Don’t neglect yourself. No if, ands or buts about it. Get some sleep, eat some veggies, drink some water. Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.

Now tell me, what are you going to do to work smarter, not harder?
